Frequently asked questions

Does homeowners insurance cover a wet basement?

Often not for seepage or gradual leaks. Sump-pump backup usually needs a separate rider, and flooding from rising water needs a separate flood policy, such as one through the NFIP.1 Read your own policy or ask your agent.

Do I need a permit?

It depends on the work and the city. Structural repairs and some drainage changes may need one. Ask the City of Council Bluffs, or the City of Carter Lake if you live there, and ask your contractor whether they will pull it.

How long does the work take?

Crack injections often take a few hours. Interior drain tile in a typical basement often takes one to a few days. Exterior excavation takes longer and depends on the weather. Your contractor's written scope should include a timeline.

What should a warranty say?

It should say what is covered (leaks, movement, or both), whether it transfers to a new owner, and what voids it. Get it in writing.

Can I do it myself?

You can usually handle gutters, downspout extensions, grading, sump pump testing, and a basic dehumidifier yourself. Structural wall work, excavation, and drain tile are best left to pros.

Who is Hedera, and do you do the work?

No. Hedera is a referral service. We pass your request to a participating independent local contractor, who quotes and performs any work under their own agreement with you. See About.

Is the contractor licensed?

Iowa requires contractors to register with the Division of Labor, and you can verify a registration yourself.2 We intend to refer only to registered contractors, but please check before you hire.
